Renovating Your Mount Pleasant BTO: Cost Guide and Design Ideas

You managed to secure a unit at Mount Pleasant Crest. The excitement is real, but so is the question now sitting at the back of your mind: how much will the renovation cost, and where do you even begin?

Mount Pleasant is one of the more interesting BTO projects from recent launches. Located in the established District 8 corridor near the former Police Academy site, it has better fundamentals than most HDB projects—mature greenery, a walkable neighbourhood, and floor plans that lend themselves to genuinely thoughtful interior design.

Here is a look at what you can expect when you finally collect your keys in 2028.

Realistic Renovation Costs in 2026

These are 2026 estimates for a standard BTO (not resale). Prices assume you are working with a mid-tier interior design firm or reliable contractor and include basic hacking, carpentry, electrical work, flooring, painting, and a kitchen and bathroom package. Costs may change by the time you collect your keys, but this is a good starting point for budgeting.

  • 2-Room Flexi (approx. 45 sqm): S$25,000 – S$38,000

  • 3-Room (approx. 65 sqm): S$35,000 – S$52,000

  • 4-Room (approx. 93 sqm): S$50,000 – S$75,000

What affects where you land in that range includes whether you go with full carpentry, your flooring choice, the kitchen scope, and smart home integration. Vinyl planks run S$3–S$5 per square foot, while porcelain tiles go up to S$8–S$12 per square foot for premium options. Keeping the developer's wet area layout saves S$8,000–S$15,000 compared to a full hack-and-rebuild. A basic smart home system adds S$3,000–S$8,000.

Room by Room: Where to Spend and Where to Save

Living room — spend here. The living room is the first thing guests see and the space you use every day. At Mount Pleasant, the standard BTO living rooms are decently sized but benefit from intentional design. A well-designed feature wall costs S$2,000–S$4,500. A built-in TV console with integrated storage costs S$3,000–S$5,500. Skip the false ceiling if your ceiling is already high; a simple cove light detail costs S$800–S$1,200 and achieves the same ambient warmth.

Kitchen — depends on your cooking habits. If you cook daily, smart storage makes a significant difference. A full custom renovation for a 4-room BTO kitchen costs S$12,000–S$20,000. If you keep the developer's wet area and only add upper and lower cabinets and countertop, budget S$6,000–S$10,000.

Master bedroom — comfort-focused. Many homeowners underinvest here and regret it. A good built-in wardrobe, proper lighting, and a feature wall behind the bed go a long way. Budget S$7,000–S$13,000 for a well-done master bedroom.

Bathrooms — keep them clean and practical. A tile change and vanity upgrade transform the feel without full hacking. Budget S$3,500–S$6,000 per bathroom for a refresh. A full hack-and-rebuild costs S$7,000–S$12,000.

Design Ideas That Work Well for Mount Pleasant BTOs

Given the development's location and the character of the surrounding Novena and Thomson neighbourhood, a few styles translate particularly well.

Soft Colonial: Light timber, rattan accents, linen upholstery, and warm white walls. This style has excellent resale longevity and photographs beautifully.

Warm Japandi: Natural materials, hidden storage, and a calm palette. This works especially well for north-facing units where cool tones do not wash out the space.

Modern Tropical: Large-format tiles in warm stone tones, indoor plants as a design element, and natural ventilation-friendly layouts. This is particularly good for units with larger balconies or dual-aspect windows.

What to avoid: All-white interiors look dated faster than any other style. Heavy dark wood throughout can make compact units feel oppressive and is better used as an accent.

Getting Started: The Renovation Timeline

Planning and interior designer selection takes four to eight weeks. Design and HDB approval takes three to five weeks. Hacking and structural work takes one to two weeks. Carpentry and wet works take four to six weeks. Painting and finishing takes one to two weeks. Handover and snagging takes one to two weeks. Total time from key collection to move-in is approximately 14 to 25 weeks.

Starting your interior designer search early—ideally while you are still waiting for key collection—means you are not starting from scratch on day one.
